Thickness Planers for Wood
A thickness planer machines boards and beams to a set thickness so the second face comes out parallel to the first. The section holds single-sided FDB Maschinen planers from the compact 220 V MB13 to the MB104, MB104F, MB104AT, MB106B and MB106H with planing widths up to 630 mm, plus the double-sided MB204A and MB206F that plane both faces in one pass.

How to choose a thickness planer
Planing width and thickness
The key figures of a thickness planer are the maximum workpiece width and the thickness range. Choose the width by the widest panel or board you actually process, plus a small margin: glued furniture panels are often wider than a plain board. Minimum thickness matters if you plane thin slats, maximum thickness if you plane beams. Also check the depth of cut per pass: on hardwoods it is reduced so the motor is not overloaded.
Single-sided or double-sided
A single-sided planer works only the top face, so the bottom face must already be flat: it is prepared on a jointer, or the stock is bought calibrated. A double-sided planer has two cutter blocks and planes top and bottom in one pass, giving a beam or board of the set thickness. For mouldings, furniture beams and packaging this cuts time considerably, while a joinery shop is usually fine with a single-sided machine.
Cutter block and feed
Surface quality depends on the number of knives, cutter block speed and feed rate: the more cuts per centimetre of length, the smoother the surface. A spiral cutter block with small carbide inserts runs quieter and tears out less grain around knots, and an insert can be rotated without removing the block. Variable feed lets you run soft pine fast and plane oak or beech slowly.
Power supply and chip extraction
Compact planers such as the MB13 run on 220 V, industrial ones on 380 V, so check which supply your workshop has. A planer produces a lot of chips, and without extraction they clog the feed area and leave dents in the workpiece. The machine's dust port diameter must match your extractor. Long workpieces are easier to feed with roller stands at the infeed and outfeed.
