Belt Grinders and Sanding Machines
The FDB Maschinen BS75 belt grinder with a 75x2000 mm belt for knife making and metal finishing. For small parts: belt and disc sanders MM300, MM370G, MM4115, BP-100, combination machines BP-150 and BDS 6, disc sanders BKC-305 and OPTIgrind TS 305. For wood: the MM2617 B edge sander, Holzstar KSO 790 and MM560 and MM560/230 drum sanders for panels up to 550 mm wide.

How to choose a belt grinder or sander
Grinder, belt-disc or drum sander
A belt grinder runs a long narrow belt on a fast motor. It removes metal quickly and evenly, so it is used for knife grinding, chamfers, removing scale and weld beads. A belt and disc sander has a short wide belt plus a disc with a work rest, handy for ends and angles of small metal, wood and plastic parts. A drum sander brings panels and boards to an exact thickness.
Belt width, length and speed
A longer belt heats up and wears more slowly; the knife maker standard is 50 or 75 mm by 2000 mm, as on the BS75. A wide 100-150 mm belt flattens faces, a narrow 25 mm belt like on the MM300 reaches tight spots. Metal needs a high belt speed, 30 m/s at 3 kW on the BS75, while wood works with less. Make sure replacement belts are easy to buy.
Power and supply
A 0.3-0.55 kW motor is enough for small parts, model making and tool sharpening. Continuous metal work and heavy stock removal call for 2-3 kW. Most compact machines run on 220 V, the BS75 needs 380 V. A tilting work table keeps the bevel angle consistent. Connect a dust extractor to the outlet: wood and abrasive dust harm both the operator and the motor.
FAQ
How does a belt grinder differ from a bench grinder with wheels?
On a bench grinder a narrow wheel does the cutting, so a long even knife bevel is hard to produce and a thin edge overheats quickly. A grinder belt is long and cools as it runs; it gives a flat surface or, on the unsupported section, a soft convex bevel. Changing grit on a belt machine takes a minute. A bench grinder is still handy for drills, chisels and lathe tools that need rough sharpening.
Which belts do I need for sharpening knives on a belt grinder?
The BS75 takes 75x2000 mm belts. A typical set covers several grits: P36-P60 for shaping bevels and removing scale, P120-P240 for refining scratches, P400 and finer for finishing before stropping. For alloyed and hardened steels, ceramic or zirconia belts cut longer and run cooler. A leather or felt belt of the same length is used for final honing.
Can one sanding machine be used for both wood and metal?
Yes, the BKC-305, BP-100 and similar models are rated for wood, metal and plastic. Before grinding metal, clean wood dust from the machine and the dust collector, as sparks can ignite it. Keep separate belts and discs for each material, because metal particles on the abrasive leave dark marks on wood. For regular metal work a dedicated belt grinder such as the BS75 is the better choice.
How much does the MM560 drum sander remove per pass?
Up to 0.5 mm per pass on workpieces up to 550 mm wide and 75 mm thick, with a minimum length of 76 mm. The 560x132 mm drum turns at 1440 rpm from a 1.5 kW motor, and feed is adjustable up to 3 m/min. Panels are brought to thickness in several passes, lowering the drum step by step and moving from coarse to fine abrasive. Connect the machine to extraction through its 100 mm port.
Which belt and disc sander to choose: MM300, BP-100 or BP-150?
The MM300 is the most compact: 7 kg, 0.3 kW, a 25.4x760 mm belt and a 127 mm disc, for modelling and small parts. The BP-100 and MM370G have a 100x915 mm belt, a 150 mm disc and a 0.37 kW motor; the BP-100 belt arm tilts from 0 to 90 degrees. The BP-150 and BDS 6 with a 150x1220 mm belt and a 230 mm disc at 0.55 kW suit larger workpieces. All of these run on 220 V.
Can you help me choose a model?
Yes. Describe the job: which parts or material, their size and thickness, what power supply you have on site and how much work there is per shift. An engineer will pick a model for these conditions, compare the options in the catalog and issue an invoice with VAT. We deliver across Ukraine by carrier, and pickup in Dnipro is also possible.
