How to choose a press
Hydraulic, manual or crank
A hydraulic press builds high force slowly and smoothly and can be stopped at any point of the stroke, which suits pressing bearings, bushings and silent blocks or straightening shafts. A manual rack or lever press is fast and needs no pump: it handles small press fits, riveting and light bending. A crank press makes fast strokes of fixed length and is meant for series stamping, blanking and punching in production.
Presses for car service
Car service shops usually take a floor-standing hydraulic frame press: a hub or steering knuckle fits between the posts, the table is height adjustable and the ram can slide along the crossbeam. 10-20 t covers most passenger car jobs, 30-50 t suits trucks and tractors. A gauge on the pump shows the real load on the part and helps avoid breaking it. A 10 t bench press such as the Unicraft WPP 10 TE is handy in a small workshop.
Force, stroke and working area
Pick the force with a 20-30% margin over the heaviest job. Next check the distance between the posts and from the table to the ram: the part must sit on its supports together with the press tools. The ram stroke sets how far a bushing can be pushed in one go without moving the supports. For stamping on crank presses also look at the table size, strokes per minute and motor power, for example 2.7 kW at 25 t on the KD2124.
Safety and maintenance
Place the part in line with the ram and use proper mandrels and support plates, not random offcuts. Overloading beyond the rated force shortens the life of the cylinder and seals. Check and top up the pump oil as the manual says and bleed air from the system after long use. If you are unsure what force you need, describe the part and we will help choose a model.
FAQ
Does a hydraulic press need a 380 V three-phase supply?
A garage or workshop press does not. The Proma HLR-10U/2...HLR-50U/2 series and the Unicraft WPP 10 TE and WPP 15 TE are driven by a hand pump and need no electrical connection, so they can stand anywhere in the shop. A 380 V supply is needed for production machines with a motor: the P6328B hydraulic press (11 kW) and the KD2124 and KD2328 crank presses. Check the available power and cable size in advance.
What else should I buy with a workshop press?
Most shops add a set of pressing adapters for bearings and bushings in the needed diameters, a pair of V-blocks for straightening shafts, and a bearing separator that grips the bearing by its inner ring. Support rings or tube sections help the part sit square, and a polycarbonate guard protects the operator. Choose adapters by the ring diameter: press only on the ring that is being fitted.
How do rack, lever and ratchet hand presses differ?
A rack press such as the Optimum DDP10, DDP20 and DDP30 drives a toothed ram through a pinion: long stroke, moderate force, good for fitting bushings and pins. The lever presses Optimum PD3 and PD5 have a short, fast stroke for repeated operations such as riveting, punching and pressing small parts. The Proma APR-3 has a ratchet, so the handle can be repositioned and you keep pressing without retracting the ram, which helps in tight spaces.
How can I notch a corner in sheet metal without a guillotine?
Use the HN-4 manual notcher. It develops 4 t and cuts a 90 degree corner with legs up to 152 mm in sheet up to 1.6 mm thick in a single stroke. Punch stroke is 20 mm, the table is 457x305 mm, it weighs 95 kg and needs no power. It is used to prepare blanks for boxes, trays and housings before bending on a brake, with clean corners and no grinder work.
P6328B hydraulic or KD2328 crank press: which to choose for 63 t?
Both develop 63 t, but for different jobs. The P6328B is a single-column hydraulic press with a 500 mm stroke and a 710x560 mm table, for straightening, pressing and bending where the ram must stop at any point. The KD2328 with a 710x480 mm table makes fast strokes of fixed length and is meant for series stamping and blanking with dies. Note the weight: 3200 kg versus 5400 kg, both need a solid floor or foundation.
Can you help me choose a model?
Yes. Describe the job: which parts or material, their size and thickness, what power supply you have on site and how much work there is per shift. An engineer will pick a model for these conditions, compare the options in the catalog and issue an invoice with VAT. We deliver across Ukraine by carrier, and pickup in Dnipro is also possible.
