How to choose a spindle moulder
What a spindle moulder does
On a spindle moulder the cutter rises through the table and the workpiece is guided along a fence or a template. It profiles edges, cuts grooves and rebates, makes tenon joints and shapes curved parts from a template. It is the core machine for cabinet doors, mouldings, tongue and groove boards and joinery.
Spindle and speeds
Spindle diameter decides which cutters fit, and vertical travel decides where on the workpiece thickness the profile goes. Several speeds are needed because large-diameter cutters run slower than small ones. A tilting spindle gets more profiles out of one cutter, and reverse rotation lets you work the part from either side.
One or two spindles
A double-spindle machine keeps two cutters set up, for example for tenon and groove, so there is no tool change between operations. That saves time on batch work. A single-spindle machine is simpler and costs less, and is enough for a workshop doing varied small jobs. The double-spindle FDB Maschinen MX50F comes in 220 V and 400 V versions.
Carriage, safety and power
A tenoning carriage holds the workpiece square to the cutter for end work, so tenons come out accurate. For safety use hold-down combs, a cutter guard and a power feeder. 220 V models suit workshops without three-phase power, 380-400 V models suit shops with steady workload. A cast iron table keeps accuracy and damps vibration.
