Wood Lathes
A wood lathe turns table legs, balusters, handles, bowls and other round parts. This section has the FDB Maschinen MCF450 and DB 1218 bench lathes with 457 mm between centres, the MCF1643 with 1000 mm and variable speed, the Proma DSL-1100V and DSO-1000, plus the DB 1018/1218 bed extension that adds turning length. We can suggest a lathe that fits the size of your parts.

How to choose a wood lathe
Distance between centres and swing
Distance between centres sets the longest blank, such as a table leg or a stair baluster. Swing over the bed limits the diameter of bowls, plates and rosettes. For furniture parts length matters more, for bowls and decorative work the diameter. If you occasionally need longer parts, check whether a bed extension can be fitted, like the DB 1018/1218 for FDB Maschinen DB lathes.
Speed control
Large blanks and bowls are started at low speed to avoid runout, while thin spindles are finished at high speed. The simplest lathes change speed by moving the belt across pulleys, which is reliable but slow. Lathes with variable speed let you adjust on the fly and match the speed to the wood species and diameter. For bowls, reverse rotation is useful when sanding.
Weight and bed rigidity
Wood blanks are often out of balance, and a light lathe starts to vibrate with a large piece. A cast iron bed and a stand bolted to the floor give a cleaner surface and less fatigue for the turner. A bench model is fine for short small parts, while furniture legs and heavy bowls call for a heavier lathe on its own stand.
Accessories
Check what comes with the lathe: drive and tail centres, faceplate, tool rest. Bowls need a scroll chuck, copy turning needs a copying attachment. The spindle thread must match the chucks and faceplates you plan to buy. A set of turning chisels, eye protection and dust extraction are needed from day one.
