A combination woodworking machine replaces several separate machines when workshop space is tight. The range covers the FDB Maschinen MLQ300TB, MLQ300 KB, MLQ343M, MLQ345M, MLQ400M with a sliding carriage and ML 210 B: circular saw, jointer, spindle moulder and mortiser, plus a thicknesser for stock up to 110-200 mm on the MLQ series. How to choose a combination machine
Which operations you need
The full MLQ combination models saw, joint, thickness, mould, cut mortises and sharpen knives. If you only need face planing and sizing, the MLC10 planer-thicknesser with 254 mm width is enough. The ML 160 3-in-1 combines a cutting unit, a 1600 W router and a mini edge bander for furniture work. Start from the list of operations you do every day.
Planing width and thicknesser
Planing width is 210 mm on the ML 210 B, 300 mm on the MLQ300TB, MLQ300 KB and MLQ343M, 350 mm on the MLQ345M and 400 mm on the MLQ400M. The thicknesser sizes stock 10-110 mm thick, 6-200 mm on the MLQ400M. The 70-78 mm cutterblock carries three or four knives. For furniture and doors 250-300 mm is enough; for wide panels pick a wider model.
Carriage, power and chips
The 960 mm sliding table on every MLQ model and the crosscut carriage of the MLQ300TB and MLQ400M give accurate crosscuts and trimming; without one, sawing is mostly ripping. All models here run on 220 V, so the machine can go in a garage. Changing over between operations takes time, so production work is better served by separate machines. A dust collector is a must. FAQ
How do the MLQ300 KB, MLQ343M and MLQ345M differ?
The MLQ300 KB and MLQ343M plane 300 mm wide, have a 2200 W motor and saw up to 100 mm. The difference is in the planer and table: the MLQ343M feeds at 10 m/min instead of 6.5 m/min and its sliding table is larger, 435 x 345 mm versus 320 x 220 mm. The MLQ345M planes 350 mm wide, has a 3000 W motor and saws up to 80 mm. All three weigh 200-235 kg, so they are stationary machines.
How thick a board can a combination machine saw?
All models here take a 250 mm blade with a 25.4 mm bore. Maximum sawing thickness is 80 mm on the ML 210 B and MLQ345M and 100 mm on the MLQ300 KB and MLQ343M. That covers boards, 50-100 mm beams and panels. Thicker beams need a separate table saw with a 315 mm blade or cutting from both sides. A thin 1.4-1.6 mm blade wastes less wood but holds a straight line less well in hardwood.
What cutters fit the spindle moulder unit?
Cutter diameter is up to 60 mm on the ML 210 B and up to 85 mm on the MLQ series, with height up to 70 mm, 50 mm on the MLQ345M. That is enough for rebates, grooves, chamfers and simple edge profiles. Large profile cutters for raised panels or tongue-and-groove boards need a dedicated spindle moulder with a more powerful spindle. Check the spindle size before buying cutters.
What is the mortising attachment for?
The mortising attachment cuts mortises and slots for mortise-and-tenon joints: table legs to aprons, frame rails, door frames. The bit travels 120 mm lengthwise, 100 mm crosswise and 50 mm vertically, so elongated mortises are possible. The ML 210 B and the MLQ series have it. It also drills round holes for dowels.
Will a household 220 V supply run a combination machine?
Yes, all models here are single-phase, but they need a dedicated circuit. A 2200 W motor draws about 10 A, the 3000 W motor of the MLQ345M about 14 A, and the starting current is several times higher. Use a 16-20 A type C or D breaker and copper cable of at least 2.5 mm2. A reel extension cord or long thin wiring causes voltage drop and motor overheating.
