How to choose a band saw for wood

Cutting height and throat

The two key figures of a band saw are the maximum cutting height and the throat, the distance from the blade to the frame. Height decides what thickness of beam or board you can resaw, throat decides how wide a workpiece will pass the frame. Both depend on wheel diameter: larger wheels mean a longer blade that fatigues less on the bends and cuts more steadily at full height.

Blade width for the job

For straight resawing use a wide blade with coarse teeth: it holds the line and does not wander at knots. For curved cuts you need a narrow blade, because the minimum turning radius depends directly on blade width. Check which blade widths the machine accepts and how easy it is to change and tension the blade. For very small shaped parts a scroll saw works better than a narrow band.

Motor, power supply and table

Resawing hardwoods and thick stock needs a stronger motor, and such models often run on 400 V. Bench and light saws run on 230 V. Look at the table: its size, tilt for angled cuts, rip fence and mitre fence. A cast iron table and a heavy frame damp vibration and give a cleaner cut.

Blade guides and safety

The blade is held by upper and lower guides, either bearings or blocks, and their setting decides whether the cut runs true. Lower the upper guide almost to the workpiece: the blade flexes less and the exposed part is minimal. A dust port, a wheel brake and an emergency stop button are worth having in a workshop with several people.

The machines come with a 12-month warranty. Goods of proper quality can be returned within 14 days in accordance with the law.
