Size by workpiece diameter
In a UDG designation the number after D is the largest workpiece diameter that can be machined between centres: D-160 for small toolroom parts, D-200 and D-250 as the most common choice for repair and machine shops, D-320 and D-400 for large shafts and gears. Centre height is roughly half that number. Choose a head with headroom for your largest part, but without extra weight you will have to lift onto the table.
Indexing methods
A universal dividing head has a worm drive, usually 1:40, and an index plate with circles of holes. Direct indexing on the spindle dial covers simple divisions into 2, 3, 4 or 6 parts. Simple indexing with the crank and plate covers most numbers up to several hundred. Numbers that the plates cannot give are produced by differential indexing, where change gears rotate the plate itself.
Mounting on the machine
Check that the tenons of the head and tailstock fit the T-slots of your milling table, and that the centre height plus the arbor fits under the spindle or cutter. The head spindle tilts, so tapered parts can be milled too. For helical grooves the head is connected through change gears to the table lead screw, so the milling machine must support that.
