How to choose a table saw

Blade diameter and cutting depth

Blade diameter decides how thick a board you can cut in one pass. The 315 mm blade of the Proma PKS-315 cuts up to 90 mm at 90 degrees and about 65 mm at 45 degrees, the 250 mm blade of the PKS-250P up to 80 mm. The DB18 mini saw with a 150 mm blade cuts up to 38 mm and suits battens, veneer and model making. For beams and thick boards choose a 250-315 mm blade.

Carriage and table size

Crosscutting and angled trimming need a sliding carriage: on the PKS-315S and PKS-315SI it travels 970 mm, enough for panels and wide stock. An extension table supports long and wide pieces. A cast iron table, as on the PKS-250P and DB1800, is heavier and damps vibration better than steel. Full chipboard sheets are best cut into strips first.

Power supply and safety

All Proma PKS-315 versions run on 400 V three-phase with a 2.2-2.5 kW motor and handle continuous shop work. The FDB Maschinen DB1800 and DB18 plug into 220 V, which is easier in a garage. A riving knife, blade guard and anti-kickback device are a must. Connect a dust collector to the outlet. We will help you pick a saw for your stock.

FAQ

How does a table saw differ from a handheld circular saw?

On a table saw the blade stays fixed and the workpiece is fed across the table along a rip fence, so a rip cut is straight over its full length and repeatable from part to part. A handheld saw is handy for cutting on site or breaking down a large sheet, but accuracy depends on the guide rail and the operator. For ripping boards into strips, sizing beams and batches of identical parts, a stationary saw is the right tool.

Which blade should I fit to a table saw?

For ripping use a blade with few teeth, 24-36 on a 250-315 mm blade: it clears chips faster and runs cooler. For crosscuts, plywood and melamine-faced chipboard use 60-80 teeth for a clean, chip-free edge. The diameter must not exceed the machine's maximum and the bore must match the arbor: 30 mm on the PKS-250P. A dull blade burns the wood and raises the risk of kickback.

What is the difference between the PKS-315, PKS-315S and PKS-315SI?

All three Proma saws take a 315 mm blade and run on 400 V. The base PKS-315 is mainly for rip cuts along the fence. The PKS-315S and PKS-315SI add a side sliding carriage with 970 mm travel for crosscuts, end trimming and cutting panels. If you mostly rip boards, the base model is enough; for accurate ends and angles choose a carriage version. An engineer will confirm the equipment difference between S and SI.

What is the DB18 mini saw with a flexible shaft for?

The DB18 is a benchtop saw with a 150 mm blade and a 0.48 kW motor; it cuts up to 38 mm and weighs 6.5 kg. Speed is infinitely variable from 0 to 10,000 rpm, so it can be set for wood, plastic or thin veneer. The flexible shaft with a collet up to 10 mm turns it into a rotary tool for drilling, sanding and polishing small parts. It suits models, strips and hobby work, not beams or boards.

How much floor space does a table saw need?

Plan for the workpiece, not just the machine: there must be clear space in front of and behind the blade for the full length of the stock and to the side for the cut width. The PKS-250P with its extension table occupies 2250 x 2020 mm and weighs 185 kg, so it is installed permanently on a level floor. The DB1800 has a 685 x 512 mm main table and a 685 x 250 mm extension and weighs 120 kg. Long boards need a roller stand at the outfeed.

Can you help me choose a table saw?

Yes. An engineer will match a saw to your stock, the cuts you make and your 220 V or 400 V supply, and advise on blades and a dust collector. We issue a VAT invoice for companies and sole proprietors. Delivery across Ukraine, pickup in Dnipro is available.
