Hydraulic press for a garage or workshop: choosing tonnage and type
A car service usually does well with a 12-20 t floor-standing hydraulic press: it handles suspension bushings, wheel hub bearings and ball joints. Trucks, farm machinery and shaft straightening call for 30-50 t, and production work for a stationary press of 63 t or more. A manual rack or lever press of 1-3 t is the right tool for small bushings and bearings on the bench.
What a hydraulic press does in a garage or workshop
A hydraulic press applies high force smoothly and under control. That is why it is needed where a hammer or a puller would damage the part: on interference fits, when a bearing or bushing has to be pushed squarely into a housing or off a shaft.
The MELITA presses catalog covers everything from 0.3-5 t manual presses to 63 t stationary hydraulic machines. Typical jobs in a car service and repair shop are these.
- Pressing suspension bushings, control arm and stabilizer bushings in and out.
- Replacing wheel hub bearings, ball joints, alternator and gearbox bearings.
- Straightening shafts, axles, brackets and welded parts.
- Assembling and dismantling farm machinery units, pumps and electric motors.
- Light bending, punching and sizing in a fitting shop.
How many tons you need: selection table
The force depends on the fit diameter, interference and the condition of the part: a seized bearing sometimes needs twice as much as a new one. So tonnage is chosen with a 30-50 percent margin - a press that constantly runs at its limit wears its cylinder seals faster and is less safe to work with.
The ranges below are approximate, based on repair shop practice. Prices come from our catalog, rounded, incl. VAT.
| Job | Press force | Type | Price incl. VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small bushings, bearings on the bench | 1-3 t | Manual rack or lever press | ~4 500 - 15 500 UAH |
| Suspension bushings, small car bearings | 10-15 t | Bench or floor hydraulic press | ~13 600 - 24 200 UAH |
| General car service: hubs, ball joints | 20 t | Floor hydraulic press | ~44 300 UAH |
| Trucks, farm machinery, shaft straightening | 30-50 t | Floor hydraulic press | ~66 400 - 133 300 UAH |
| Production: press fitting, sizing, stamping | 63 t | Stationary single-column press | ~336 000 UAH |
Press types: floor, bench, single-column, manual press
The frame type decides which part fits into the press and how rigid it is. For a car service the main choice is a floor press with an H-frame on two columns.
- Floor hydraulic press - a two-column frame with a table that is moved up and down on pins. The most versatile option for a garage: a large working range takes a shaft, a hub or a complete control arm.
- Bench hydraulic press - the same design, more compact, mounted on a workbench. Fits a garage or a small workshop where parts are no larger than a passenger car hub.
- Single-column (C-frame) stationary press with an electric drive and power unit - for production and batch work. The table is open on three sides and the ram stroke is long, but it needs a solid base for its weight and a three-phase supply.
- Manual press, rack or lever type - no hydraulics, force up to a few tons. Fast and precise for small bushings, keys and bearings when you want to feel the force in your hand.
What to check in hydraulic press specifications
Besides tonnage, compare a few parameters - they decide whether your part fits and how convenient the press will be in daily work.
- Working range - the distance from the table to the ram. On HLR presses it goes from 0-340 mm on the compact 10 t model to 1-1.1 m on the 20-50 t floor models: a large press takes a shaft or a hub assembly.
- Ram stroke - how far the piston extends in one cycle, usually 150-200 mm. For longer parts the table is reset in height.
- Pressure gauge - shows system pressure, so you can see the force you are actually applying. The pressure-to-tons conversion is in the press manual.
- Pump drive - hand, foot, air-hydraulic or electric. In a busy car service an air or electric drive frees your hands and speeds up the work.
- Sideways cylinder shift and a ram return spring - small details that save time every day when centring the part.
Models in the MELITA catalog
For a small workshop or garage - the HLR-10U hydraulic press: 10 t, 180 mm stroke, 0-340 mm working range, 50 kg, about 17 100 UAH incl. VAT. The slightly larger HLR-12U at 12 t has a range up to 910 mm, about 20 200 UAH. The bench-type Unicraft WPP 15 TE at 15 t with a remote pump and gauge costs about 24 200 UAH.
For a full car service the most popular class is 20 t: the HLR-20U with a 190 mm stroke and 54-1044 mm range, about 44 300 UAH. For truck service and farm machinery - the HLR-30U at 30 t, about 66 400 UAH, or the 50 t HLR-50U. Check availability of the larger models, some are supplied to order.
For production there is a stationary P6328B hydraulic press: 63 t, single-column, 710 x 560 mm table, 500 mm stroke, 11 kW motor, 3.2 t weight. It is a Soviet-design machine built in 1994, barely used and prepared for sale, about 336 000 UAH incl. VAT. For sheet bending and rolling see the separate bending machines and rolls section.
Safety and how to order a press
Never stand in line with the part being pressed out: a bearing or its race can crack and fly out. Use mandrels of the right diameter and set the part squarely on the support plates. If the force keeps rising but the part does not move, stop and check for misalignment or a forgotten circlip instead of raising the pressure to the limit.

FAQ
How many tons should a hydraulic press for a car service have?
For passenger cars 12-20 t is usually enough, and 20 t is the most versatile choice. Trucks and farm machinery need 30-50 t.
Is a 10 t press enough for suspension bushings?
For most passenger car bushings - yes. For seized hub bearings and larger parts it is better to have 20 t with a margin.
Manual press or hydraulic press - which is better?
A 1-3 t manual rack or lever press is faster and more precise for small bushings on the bench. Suspension bushings, hubs and straightening need a hydraulic press of 10 t or more.
Floor or bench hydraulic press?
A bench press is more compact and cheaper but limited by part size. A floor press has a working range of about a metre and takes a shaft or a hub assembly.
Can I buy a press with a VAT invoice and delivery?
Yes, we issue VAT invoices, deliver across Ukraine by carrier, and pickup in Dnipro is free. Presses come with a 12-month warranty.
