How to choose a tapping machine
Why a machine instead of a tap wrench
Tapping by hand is slow and depends on the operator: a tap is easy to tilt or break, especially in small sizes. An arm tapping machine keeps the tap strictly square, the motor turns it at the right speed and reverses it to back out. This makes the job several times faster, so these machines are used where steel structures, housings and frames are assembled.
Thread range and power
The key figure is the largest thread the machine cuts in steel. The DS16 and DS16L cover the common M3-M16 sizes used in most fastening. Flanges, plates and thick parts with M24 or M36 threads need the DS24 or DS36 with a 1.2 kW motor and lower speeds, since a large tap needs more torque. The arm reach sets how large an area of the part can be tapped without moving it.
Tooling and use
Taps go into quick-change holders with a safety clutch for the GT 12 chuck: the clutch slips on overload and saves the tap. Use machine taps and tapping fluid, and reduce speed in stainless steel and blind holes. Drill the tap hole to the size from a tap drill chart. What is the difference between the DS16 and DS16L tapping machines?
According to the specifications, both tap M3-M16 threads and have a 0.6 kW motor, 0-312 rpm and a GT 12 chuck. The difference is weight: the DS16L is 42 kg against 32 kg for the DS16. The letter L on such machines usually means a longer arm, i.e. a larger working radius for big parts and plates. For small parts next to the machine the DS16 is enough; for wide sheets and frames, check the exact radius with our engineer.
Can a tapping machine cut external threads on bolts and pipes?
No. These machines work with taps and cut internal threads in holes only. External threads on studs and bolts are cut with a die in a die holder or on a screw-cutting lathe, and pipe threads with a pipe threader. An arm tapping machine is the right tool when parts have many fastener holes: flanges, plates, brackets and housings.
Does a tapping machine need a three-phase supply?
No. The DS16, DS16L, DS24 and DS36 all run on 220 V, 50 Hz. The 0.6 and 1.2 kW motors plug into an ordinary earthed socket; a dedicated line is only worth it if a welder or compressor shares the same circuit. So the machine can work in a workshop, a garage or an assembly site without 380 V.
How is a tapping machine mounted and how much space does it need?
The arm base is bolted to a bench, a welding table or a separate stand so the tap torque cannot shift it. The DS16, DS16L and DS24 measure 600x800x200 mm, the DS36 870x850x230 mm, and they weigh 32 to 53 kg. The table must be rigid and flat: any play in the base tilts the tap. Clamp the part as well, especially for threads of M16 and above.
Can it tap stainless steel and aluminium?
Yes, with speeds and taps matched to the material. The 0-312 rpm range of the DS16, 0-200 rpm of the DS24 and 0-156 rpm of the DS36 let you slow down for stainless steel and large sizes. For stainless use cobalt HSS taps and a heavy tapping paste, for aluminium use taps with polished flutes and a fluid that prevents built-up edge. In blind holes leave extra depth for chips.
