How to choose a metal milling machine

Mill-drill or universal mill

A mill-drill has one vertical head on a column and a cross table. It drills, bores and mills faces and slots, which is enough for a repair shop and small batches. A universal milling machine such as the TMM800 or UF100 has a heavier frame, a knee table and an extra horizontal spindle, so it removes more metal per pass and holds accuracy on larger parts.

Table size and travel

The size of your parts sets the table size and axis travel: longitudinal, cross and vertical. The Proma FP-25, for example, has a 585x190 mm table with 375 and 180 mm travel. Also check the spindle-to-table and spindle-to-column distances: the part plus vise and cutter must fit with room to spare. The DM45 head tilts 90 degrees either way for angled milling without re-clamping the part.

Spindle, speeds and power supply

The spindle taper (MT3, MT4, ISO 40) decides which arbors and collets fit. The speed range should cover slow drilling of large holes as well as fast work with small cutters. Vario models change speed steplessly without moving belts. Some machines, like the DM45LW, UF100 and Proma FP-25, need three-phase power; for a garage without it there are 230 V models: OPTImill BF 20 Vario, BF 20L Vario and Proma FPX-25E. We can help choose a model for your parts.

FAQ

Can I do milling on an ordinary drill press?

It is better not to. A drill press spindle and chuck are built for axial load, while a milling cutter pushes sideways, so a chuck on a Morse taper can drop out and the bearings wear quickly. Without a compound table with leadscrews you also cannot move the part accurately along the axes. A mill-drill has a spindle drawbar (M12 on the BF 20BL and DM45) and a table with X and Y feed for this.

BF 20BL or DM45: which suits a workshop?

The BF 20BL runs on 220 V: 1.1 kW, a 700x180 mm table, MT3 taper, variable speed 50-2250 rpm. It takes end mills up to 20 mm, face mills up to 63 mm and drills up to 25 mm. The DM45 needs 380 V but has 1.5 kW, an 800x240 mm table, MT4 taper, end mills up to 32 mm, face mills up to 80 mm, drilling to 40 mm and a tapping function. For longer parts there is the DM45LW with a 1000x240 mm table.

What should I buy together with a milling machine?

The basic set is a machine vise sized to the table, a collet chuck or collets for the spindle taper (MT3, MT4 or ISO 40), a clamping kit for the T-slots (12 mm on the BF 20BL and DM45LW, 14 mm on the DM45 and UF100) and the cutters. A digital readout and a coolant system are options on the BF 20BL, DM45 and TMM800. A stand is not listed for the BF 20BL and DM45, so plan a solid bench or base.

Why fit a digital readout (DRO) to a milling machine?

A DRO shows table and head positions from scales mounted on the axes. You no longer count handwheel turns or allow for leadscrew backlash: hole positions, slot depth and offsets from a datum are set by the numbers. It pays off when drilling hole patterns by coordinates, on long travels and in small batches. On the BF 20BL, DM45 and TMM800 the DRO is optional and can also be added later.

How heavy is a milling machine and what does installation need?

Weights differ a lot: the BF 20BL is 120 kg, the DM45 300 kg, the DM45LW 330 kg, the UF100 1350 kg and the TMM800 2200 kg. Bench models go on a bench or stand that can take the weight and vibration. Universal mills are anchored to a concrete floor and levelled, and unloading needs a crane or forklift. Check door widths in advance: the TMM800 measures 2070x2020x2330 mm.

Can you help me choose a model?

Yes. Describe the job: which parts or material, their size and thickness, what power supply you have on site and how much work there is per shift. An engineer will pick a model for these conditions, compare the options in the catalog and issue an invoice with VAT. We deliver across Ukraine by carrier, and pickup in Dnipro is also possible.
