Abrasive Cut-Off Saws for Metal

FDB Maschinen GYQ400B (2.2 kW) and GYQ400HP (3 kW) abrasive chop saws for metal with a 400 mm wheel, cutting angle from 45 to 90 degrees and wheels for moving around the shop. Each model comes in a 220 V and a 380 V version. For clean, burr-free cuts there is the Metallkraft MTS 356-4B dry-cut saw with a toothed blade, four speeds and mitre cuts up to 45 degrees.

How to choose an abrasive cut-off saw

What a chop saw cuts

A chop saw swings an abrasive cut-off wheel down onto a workpiece clamped in its vise. It quickly cuts pipe, angle, channel, profile and bar, also at an angle. The cut is less accurate and hotter than on a band saw or a toothed-blade dry-cut saw, but the machine is cheaper, lighter and can be moved to where the steel lies. That is why it is used on building sites, in steel erection and in cutting areas.

Power, wheel and supply

The 400 mm wheel of the GYQ400 models cuts larger sections than cut-off saws with 355 mm wheels. The 3 kW motor of the GYQ400HP slows down less in thick steel than the 2.2 kW of the GYQ400B. The 220 V version suits sites without three-phase power, the 380 V one suits a workshop. The belt drive protects the motor from shocks if the wheel jams.

Safety and consumables

Use 400 mm cut-off wheels rated for at least 3000 rpm with a 32 mm bore. The wheel wears down and is replaced once it is smaller than 200 mm. Clamp the workpiece firmly, wear goggles and gloves and keep sparks away from flammable materials. We can help choose a saw and wheels for your steel.

FAQ

Chop saw or angle grinder: which is better for cutting sections?

An angle grinder with a 230 mm disc is handy for a few cuts on site, but the cut is freehand and the depth is limited to about 65 mm. A metal chop saw with a 400 mm wheel clamps the workpiece in a vise, holds an angle from 45 to 90 degrees and gives the same square end on every part. If you cut dozens of tubes, angles or channels a day, the saw pays back in time and accuracy.

How does the MTS 356-4B saw differ from the GYQ400 chop saws?

The GYQ400B and GYQ400HP cut with an abrasive wheel: fast, but with sparks, heat and a burr on the edge. The Metallkraft MTS 356-4B uses a toothed saw blade, so the cut is cooler and cleaner, and four speeds let you match the speed to steel or non-ferrous metal. It suits parts that go straight to welding or assembly without deburring. The abrasive chop saw is cheaper to run on mild steel stock and tolerates dirty material.

How do I connect a 220 V chop saw, and can I use the 380 V version in a garage?

The 380 V version cannot run on a 220 V supply: its induction motor needs three phases. For a garage or site take the GYQ400B/220 with 2.2 kW or the GYQ400HP/220 with 3 kW. A 3 kW motor on 220 V draws about 15-17 A while cutting and more at start, so use a dedicated line with at least 2.5 mm² cable and a C or D curve breaker. A long thin extension lead drops voltage and cutting power.

Which cut-off wheels do I need and how many should I buy?

The GYQ400 takes 400x32x3.2 mm wheels rated for at least 3000 rpm. For mild steel use standard metal cut-off wheels, for stainless steel use INOX wheels that are free of iron and sulphur. The number of cuts per wheel depends on the section and material, so a pack of 5-10 wheels is a sensible start. Store wheels in a dry place, because a damp wheel loses strength.

Can a chop saw cut aluminium and stainless steel?

Stainless steel can be cut with an INOX wheel and light pressure, so the metal does not overheat and discolour. Aluminium and copper cut poorly with an abrasive wheel: the soft metal clogs it, the wheel heats up and may crack. For non-ferrous metals and thin-wall profiles a saw with a toothed blade such as the MTS 356-4B, run at lower speed with a suitable blade, is the better choice. Abrasive chop saws are best for mild steel stock.

Can you help me choose a model?

Yes. An engineer will match a chop saw or cold saw to your metal, sections and 220 or 380 V supply, recommend wheels and issue a VAT invoice. We deliver across Ukraine, and pickup in Dnipro is available.
