Laboratory Equipment for Foundry Moulding Sands
Laboratory equipment for foundries: instruments for testing moulding and core sands and base sand. The range covers hardness testers for green and dry moulds and cores, a laboratory sand rammer for specimens, a strength testing machine, moisture, gas permeability, mouldability and friability testers, and apparatus for grain size analysis and clay content. Some models are made by NIILITMASH.

How to Equip a Moulding Sand Laboratory
What Is Tested in the Sand
The moulding sand decides whether a casting comes out free of burn-on, gas holes and mould collapse. A foundry lab usually checks moisture, permeability and green compression strength every shift, as well as the hardness of the finished mould. Less often, when a new batch of sand or clay arrives, grain size distribution and clay content are measured. The set of instruments depends on the mixtures you use: green clay-bonded sand, dry sand or chemically bonded core sand.
Sand Rammer and Standard Specimens
Most tests are not done on a lump of sand but on a standard cylindrical specimen compacted in a laboratory sand rammer with a set number of weight drops. Only then can results from different shifts and laboratories be compared. That is why the rammer is bought first: without it, the permeability tester and the strength machine give random numbers. Plan specimen tubes and stands that match your instruments together with the rammer.
Strength and Permeability
The strength testing machine breaks the specimen and shows compression strength, and with the right fixture also tensile or shear strength. A bell-type permeability tester blows a known volume of air through the specimen and measures time or pressure. For sands in contact with hot metal, strength in the moisture condensation zone is checked separately, since it governs buckles and scabs on the casting.
Mould and Core Hardness
A mould hardness tester shows how firmly the mould is rammed: too soft causes swelling and burn-on, too hard blocks the escape of gases. Green moulds and dry moulds or cores need different testers, which is why the range has the 04412А tester for green moulds and cores and a separate 04421А tester for dry moulds and cores. Readings are taken at several points across the mould to see uneven compaction.
Sand, Moisture and Friability
A rapid moisture tester lets you correct the mixture during the shift. The grain size apparatus sieves the sand into fractions, and the elutriation apparatus separates the clay fraction. A separate apparatus measures mouldability and friability, that is, how well the sand fills the pattern and whether it crumbles from the edges. If you are not sure where to start, send us a description of your sands and we will suggest a minimum set.
