Bench Drill Presses for Metal
A bench drill press sits on a workbench in a workshop, garage or production area. The models here drill up to 13-20 mm in steel, depending on the model. You will find Proma, FDB Maschinen and Optimum machines, including the Quantum line, with 350-750 W motors and an MT2 spindle taper, for a 230 V socket or 400 V three-phase supply. We can help you choose a model for your parts.

How to Choose a Bench Drill Press
Drilling Capacity
The key figure is the maximum drilling diameter in steel. For the bench models in this section it ranges from 13 to 20 mm. Also check the continuous drilling diameter: it is usually 2-4 mm smaller, and it is the figure to size the machine by if you drill large holes every day. For sheet, brackets and small repairs 13-16 mm is enough; for flanges and thick plates take a 20 mm model with a 750 W motor.
230 V or 400 V
Machines marked /230 run from an ordinary single-phase socket and suit a garage or small workshop. Models marked /400 need three-phase supply: a three-phase motor pulls more evenly under load and holds speed better with large drills. Check what supply the room has before buying, because converting a 400 V machine to 230 V is rarely worth it.
Throat, Quill Travel and Table
The throat, or distance from the spindle axis to the column, shows how far from the edge of a part you can drill: on these bench models it is roughly 105 to 195 mm. Quill travel of 50-85 mm sets the depth you can drill without moving the table. A table that tilts 45° and swings around the column allows angled holes. For accurate positioning, mount a machine vise or a cross-slide vise on the table.
Speed Control
On most bench drill presses the speed is changed by moving the belt between pulleys: simple and reliable, but the machine must be stopped. Models with variable speed let you adjust it with a knob while running. The rule is simple: the larger the drill and the harder the metal, the lower the speed. A 16-20 mm drill in steel needs a few hundred rpm, so look at the bottom of the speed range.
