The clutch transmits rotation from the flywheel to the press shaft, the brake stops the shaft after the ram stroke. How to Choose a Clutch-Brake for a Press
Clutch Marking
УВ series clutch-brakes differ by size: it defines the disc diameter, the brake lining dimensions and the torque the clutch can transmit. The model is given in the press manual and is often stamped on the clutch housing. Without the manual, we need the outer diameter of the housing, the shaft diameter and splines, and the dimensions of the old linings. Send these data or a photo of the unit and we will help identify the model.
How the Unit Works
On most crank presses the clutch and the brake are friction units working as a pair. With the clutch engaged, the discs are clamped and the flywheel drives the shaft; when the clutch disengages, the brake applies and stops the shaft in a set position. With a pneumatic drive, check the line air pressure, the air valve and the seals before replacing the unit: a pressure drop gives the same symptoms as worn discs.
Signs of Wear
The ram does not stop at the top position but travels further, meaning the overrun angle has grown. The clutch slips under load, the housing runs hot, there is a smell of burnt lining, or a knock is heard on engagement. Large overrun is dangerous for the operator: stop the press and check the brake before continuing work.
Discs or the Whole Clutch
If the housing, splines and springs are fine, replacing the brake discs or their linings is enough and costs much less than a new unit. A complete clutch-brake is needed when the housing is cracked, the splines are worn, the discs are warped, or after the press has jammed. After any replacement, set the clearances and check the shaft overrun angle on idle strokes.
