Belt Grinder: What It Is and How to Choose a Belt Grinding Machine

In short

A belt grinder is a belt grinding machine: an abrasive belt runs over two or three wheels at high speed, and the part is pressed against it on a platen, a contact wheel or the slack belt. For metal, buy a grinder with a belt speed of about 20-30 m/s and at least 2 kW, such as the FDB Maschinen BS75 (75x2000 mm belt, 30 m/s). For wood and light work, a combined belt and disc sander at 8-25 thousand UAH incl. VAT is enough.

What a belt grinder is

In Ukrainian workshops the word "grinder" usually means a belt grinding machine. Instead of a grinding wheel it uses an endless abrasive belt. The belt wraps around the drive pulley on the motor shaft, a tension wheel and a tracking wheel that keeps the belt from walking off.

A belt grinder usually has three working zones, and they are what make it versatile:

  • Platen (a flat plate behind the belt) - for flat grinding, truing surfaces and knife bevels.
  • Contact wheel - for concave surfaces, removing weld beads and fast stock removal.
  • Slack belt with no support - for convex surfaces, radii and finishing.

Belt grinder or bench grinder: the difference

A bench grinder with two wheels is cheaper and simpler. It is good for lathe tools, chisels, punches and freehand drill sharpening. But the wheel is narrow, loads up quickly on soft materials and heats the part strongly at the contact point.

A belt is long, so each section of abrasive has time to cool on its way round. The part heats less, and you can remove metal over a wide strip. Changing a belt takes a minute: from coarse P36 to finishing P240 without remounting or dressing a wheel.

The rule is simple: if you sharpen tools, take a bench grinder such as the BKL-2000 - about 10 800 UAH incl. VAT. If you work on parts - chamfers, burrs, flat faces, knives - you need a belt grinder from the grinding machines section.

How to choose a belt grinder: key specs

Before buying, decide on the material (metal or wood), the part size and the duty - a few hours a week or a full shift. Then check the specs in this order:

  • Belt speed. For steel, belt machines usually run at 20-30 m/s. Wood machines are slower: the belt on benchtop combined models runs at about 4-5 m/s, on the large MM2617 B at 16 m/s. If the manual gives only rpm, belt speed is v = π × D × n / 60 000 (D - drive pulley diameter in mm, n - rpm).
  • Belt size. A long belt (2000 mm or more) cools better and lasts longer. A width of 50-75 mm suits metal and knives, 100-150 mm suits wood and wide flat faces.
  • Power and voltage. Heavy stock removal on metal needs headroom - from 2 kW. Check whether you have 380 V: powerful models are often three-phase.
  • Working zones and tables. A platen, a contact wheel, a tilting table for chamfers.
  • Rigidity and weight. A heavy frame does not vibrate and holds the angle. A light benchtop machine has to be bolted to the bench.
  • Dust extraction. A dust port is a must for wood and desirable for metal.

Belts and safety

The belt matters as much as the machine. Belt size must match the manual exactly: the tensioner only takes up a small difference in length.

A few rules that save belts and health:

  • Grit: P36-P60 for stock removal and welds, P80-P120 for shaping, P180-P400 for finishing.
  • Abrasive: aluminium oxide for carbon steel and wood, zirconia and ceramic for stainless steel and heavy stock removal.
  • Keep a separate belt for aluminium: it loads the abrasive. Aluminium dust mixed with steel dust and scale in one collector is a fire hazard.
  • Metal sparks and wood dust in one extraction bag are a fire risk. Keep separate machines for wood and metal, or at least a separate collector.
  • Wear safety glasses, do not hold small parts with your fingers - use clamps, and do not wear gloves near the belt.

Buy a belt grinder from MELITA

MELITA (NTC Melita LLC) has been selling metalworking equipment from Dnipro since 2015. All machines carry a 12-month warranty. Companies get an invoice with VAT.

FAQ

What is a belt grinder?

It is a belt grinding machine: an abrasive belt runs over wheels, and the part is worked on a platen, a contact wheel or the slack belt. It is used for knives, chamfers, weld cleanup and flat grinding.

What belt speed do I need for metal?

For steel, usually 20-30 m/s. Benchtop wood machines (about 4-5 m/s) will grind metal too, but slowly, and the sparks go into the same dust path as the wood dust.

Can I grind wood and metal on the same grinder?

Technically yes, but dust and sparks in one collector are dangerous. If you work both materials regularly, use separate machines or a separate dust collector.

220 V or 380 V belt grinder?

Benchtop wood models run on 220 V. The 3 kW BS75 metal grinder needs a three-phase 380 V supply.

How much does a belt grinder cost?

In our catalog, belt grinding machines cost from ~8 200 UAH incl. VAT (BP-100) to ~61 500 UAH (MM2617 B). The BS75 metal grinder is about 46 200 UAH incl. VAT.
