How to Choose a Bench Grinder
Wheel Diameter and Width
Wheel size is the main parameter. Wheels of 150-200 mm suit a workshop: sharpening lathe tools, drills and knives and light deburring. 250 mm wheels are shop-floor class, and 300 mm wheels 50 mm wide go on heavy industrial grinders for intensive work and rough grinding. A wider wheel wears more slowly and gives the tool more support. Note the bore, from 16 to 75 mm, as replacement wheels must match it.
Power and Supply
Motor power decides whether the speed drops when a part is pressed hard against the wheel. For a workshop, 550 W and a 230 V socket are enough. Shop-floor models have 0.9-2.2 kW motors on 400 V and are built for full-shift work. Large 300 mm wheels run at about 1450 rpm and smaller ones at about 2900 rpm, so that the surface speed stays within safe limits.
Stand, Tool Rests and Guards
A pedestal grinder such as the BKS-2500 stands on the floor at a comfortable height and frees the workbench. A bench model needs a sturdy table and should be bolted down. Check for adjustable tool rests, kept no more than 2-3 mm from the wheel, wheel guards and clear eye shields. A dust extraction port, as on the OPTIgrind GU 30, lets you connect an extractor.
Choosing the Wheels
Usually one side gets a coarse wheel for rough grinding and the other a fine wheel for finishing. Carbide tools are ground on green silicon carbide or diamond wheels. A new wheel is checked for cracks before mounting and run idle for a short time after it is fitted. When a wheel wears unevenly, it is dressed with a diamond dresser to remove runout.
