Circular Saw Blade Sharpening Machines

A saw blade sharpener restores the teeth of a circular saw blade on the face and top with an adjustable angle, so the blade cuts straight again and does not overheat. This section has the FDB Maschinen MF 126 and Holzstar SBSM 700 for blades from 80 to 700 mm. The Holzstar uses a 125 mm diamond wheel suited to carbide teeth. For woodworking shops, sawmills and furniture production.

How to Choose a Saw Blade Sharpener

Blade Diameter and Bore

First check which blades the machine accepts. Both models here take blades from 80 to 700 mm, which covers handheld circular saw blades as well as blades for panel saws and multi-rip saws. The MF 126 arbor takes bores from 20 to 40 mm. The blade is mounted on an arbor through its bore, so blades with a non-standard bore need reducer rings. For large blades the rigidity of the holder matters: the blade must not vibrate while grinding.

Diamond or Abrasive Wheel

Most modern circular saw blades have brazed carbide teeth, which can only be ground with a diamond wheel. A conventional abrasive wheel wears quickly and overheats the carbide, causing micro-cracks in the teeth. Blades with plain steel teeth can be sharpened with an abrasive wheel. The Holzstar SBSM 700 comes with a 125 mm diamond wheel; the FDB MF 126 is designed for carbide-tipped blades and uses a 125 mm wheel.

Grinding Angles

Each tooth has a hook angle and a clearance angle, and alternate top bevel teeth also have a bevel angle. These decide whether a blade suits cross-cutting, ripping, laminate or non-ferrous metal. On the machine the angle is set by tilting the motor unit and the blade holder: up to ±30° on the MF 126, while the SBSM 700 motor unit swivels 20° and its blade holder tilts from -30° to 45°. Note the angles of a new blade before sharpening.

When In-House Sharpening Pays Off

Your own machine pays off when a shop runs several blades and has to send them out for sharpening every week. A blade sharpened on time loses less material per sharpening and survives more regrinds, and you do not wait for a service. A dull blade shows itself: the saw drifts, the wood burns, laminate edges chip and the saw motor works under a heavier load.
