How to match accessories to your machine

Lathe chucks and jaws

A chuck is chosen by diameter and by how it mounts to the spindle: the flange or adapter plate must match your lathe's spindle nose. Straight jaws grip small parts from outside and rings from inside, reverse jaws grip large diameters from outside. Spare jaws must match the chuck's scroll pitch, for example 9 or 10 mm, and the chuck model, otherwise they will not meet at the centre.

Magnetic stands and chucks

A magnetic stand holds a dial indicator on the table or bed and is used for aligning parts, checking runout and setting up the machine. Look at arm reach and magnet force. A magnetic chuck holds steel parts on a surface grinder table: a permanent one needs no power, an electromagnetic one gives adjustable holding and demagnetising. Choose the chuck size by the table size.

Pipe benders and metal bending

A manual lever pipe bender suits thin-walled pipe of small diameter, a hydraulic one handles thicker walls and larger diameters where hand force is not enough: the hydraulic HRB 10 and HOT-150 develop 10 t and bend pipe up to 60 mm. What matters is a set of formers for your pipe sizes and the minimum bend radius: too tight a radius flattens and kinks the pipe. A universal bending machine bends flat bar, round and square bar.

Tables and other accessories

A compound table is mounted on a drill press to move the part along two axes and drill holes to a layout without re-clamping, and to do light milling. Check table size, axis travel and height so there is room left under the spindle. A KAISER balancer takes the weight of a suspended tool off the operator's arm, and a tapping head lets you cut threads on a drill press.
