How to choose a benchtop lathe

What 180x300 and 210x400 mean

The first number is the largest workpiece diameter over the bed, the second is the distance between centres, the longest part you can hold between the chuck and the tailstock. The Turner 180x300 handles parts up to 180 mm in diameter and 300 mm long, the Turner 210x400 up to 200-210 mm depending on version and 400 mm. Leave a margin: the usable length is shorter by the chuck and tool overhang, and the swing over the carriage is smaller than over the bed.

Variable speed and thread cutting

Vario or V in the name means stepless speed control; the Turner 210x400VD covers 50-2500 rpm. Low speeds are for large diameters and threading, high speeds for finishing small parts and non-ferrous metals. Screw-cutting models cut metric and imperial threads from the lead screw, using the supplied change gears, while the Turner 210x400VE has an electronic gearbox and needs no gear changes.

Installation and power

A benchtop lathe weighs 40-75 kg, so it needs a rigid bench or stand, ideally bolted down. It runs on 220 V from a dedicated earthed socket. Before the first start remove the preservation grease, check the headstock oil level where there is one, and level the bed so the lathe does not turn a taper. If you are unsure which model suits your parts, we will help you choose.

FAQ

How long a bar can pass through the spindle of a mini lathe?

Bar stock that fits through the spindle bore is not limited by the distance between centres. The Turner 210x400VD has a 21 mm spindle bore, so bar up to 20 mm can be fed from behind the headstock and parts turned one after another from a single bar. A long bar sticking out at the back whips at speed, so support it or cut it into pieces. Larger diameters are held only in the chuck and tailstock centre.

Which tools and accessories should I buy for a bench lathe?

The Turner 210x400VD tool post takes 10x10 mm shank tools, so get a set of turning, facing, parting and threading tools in that size, or holders with indexable inserts. For the MK-2 tailstock you will need a live centre, a drill chuck with an MK-2 arbor and centre drills. A caliper, a dial indicator for setup and slideway oil are also useful.

What depth of cut can a mini lathe take in steel?

The 0.75 kW motor of the Turner 210x400VD and its light bed are designed for moderate cuts. In structural steel a typical cut is 0.5-1 mm per side per pass at a feed of 0.08-0.16 mm/rev, more in aluminium and brass. If the machine chatters or the motor bogs down, reduce depth rather than feed and check that the tool is exactly on centre. Finish with a light cut at higher speed.

Which metric threads can a bench lathe cut?

The Turner 210x400VD cuts metric threads with a pitch of 0.5 to 3.5 mm. That covers standard threads from about M3 (0.5 mm pitch) to M24 (3 mm pitch), plus fine pitches on fittings and nuts. Coarse pitches are cut in several passes at low speed, and small internal threads are easier to cut with a tap held in the tailstock.

When is a bench lathe not enough and a floor lathe needed?

A bench lathe handles diameters up to 180-210 mm and lengths up to 300-400 mm. If you need to turn shafts longer than 400 mm, large discs, pass bar over 20 mm through the spindle or remove a lot of metal in batch work, look at floor-standing screw-cutting lathes from 1.5 kW, usually on 380 V. For repairs, model making and small batches a bench lathe is enough.

Can you help me choose a model?

Yes. An engineer will match a bench lathe to your part sizes, material and threads, recommend tooling and issue a VAT invoice. We deliver across Ukraine, and pickup in Dnipro is available.
