Pipe bender: types and how to choose manual or hydraulic
For water and gas pipe from 1/2 to 2 inches with a 2.75-4.5 mm wall, choose a 10-16 t hydraulic pipe bender - in our catalog these cost from ~13,000 to ~30,000 UAH incl. VAT. Thin-wall copper and steel tubing up to 7/8 inch needs a manual lever bender, and arcs from square or rectangular tube need a profile (roll) bender. A hydraulic ram bender would crush thin-wall and profile tube, so the pipe decides the tool, not the budget.
Types of pipe benders
A pipe bender bends a pipe to a set angle and radius without kinking and with minimal ovality. There are four main types of pipe bending machine. They differ in how the force is applied and how the pipe is supported in the bend zone.
- Manual (lever) bender. The tube is wrapped around a former (roller) with a handle. Suits copper, brass and thin-wall steel tubing of small diameter and bends up to 180°.
- Hydraulic bender. A hand-pumped 10-16 t cylinder pushes a shoe (former) into a pipe resting on two supports. Designed for heavy-wall water and gas pipe from 1/2 to 2 inches.
- Electromechanical bender. A motor and gearbox rotate the bending die while the pipe is drawn around it. The angle is set by a stop, so every part in a batch is identical. Thin-wall tube with a tight radius is bent over a mandrel inserted into the tube.
- Profile bender (roll bender). Three rollers gradually roll square tube, flat bar or angle into a large-radius arc over several passes. It is the tool for greenhouse arches, canopies and frames, not for elbows.
How to choose a pipe bender: pipe, wall, radius, angle
Start with the drawing, not the catalog. Write down the pipe material, outside diameter, wall thickness, required radius and angle, and how many identical parts you need. Then check the parameters in this order:
- Pipe type and section. Round heavy-wall - hydraulic; round thin-wall and copper - manual lever; profile tube into an arc - profile bender.
- Diameter. Hydraulic bender formers are marked in inches by nominal bore, not by outside diameter. Check your pipe against the table below.
- Wall thickness. A thin wall flattens or wrinkles on a ram bender. For example, the HBM-240/16-R is rated for a 2.75-4.5 mm wall.
- Bend radius. It is measured along the pipe centreline. On hydraulic benders it is fixed by the former and is roughly three outside diameters: on the HRB 10 from 62 mm for 1/2 inch to 187 mm for 2 inch.
- Angle. Hydraulic models reach 90-120° (HRB 10: 90° on small formers, 120° from 1 1/4 inch), manual lever benders up to 180°. The pipe springs back slightly when unloaded, so bend a little past the target.
- Volume. A few elbows a week - a manual or hydraulic tool. A batch with identical angles - an electromechanical machine with stops.
Hydraulic pipe bender for round pipe: former sizes
This is the most common type for heating, plumbing, gas and structural work in round pipe. You pump the handle, the ram pushes out a former of the right size, and the pipe bends between two supports. No electricity is needed, so the tool works on site.
The inch marking on the formers refers to the nominal bore of water and gas pipe. The actual outside diameter is noticeably larger (values per GOST 3262; EN 10255 pipe differs by a few tenths of a mm):
| Former size | Nominal bore | Pipe outside diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2″ | DN15 | 21.3 mm |
| 3/4″ | DN20 | 26.8 mm |
| 1″ | DN25 | 33.5 mm |
| 1 1/4″ | DN32 | 42.3 mm |
| 1 1/2″ | DN40 | 48.0 mm |
| 2″ | DN50 | 60.0 mm |
Manual pipe bender for copper and thin-wall tube
The ROT-180K manual bender handles round tube of 3/8, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 3/4 and 7/8 inch and square tube of 3/4 and 1 inch with a 0.8-1.2 mm wall, up to 180°. It is the tool for copper lines of air conditioners and refrigerators, hydraulic and fuel lines, thin-wall furniture and decorative frames. The base bolts to a bench.
If you need to bend flat bar, round bar or square bar rather than pipe, look at universal manual bending machines. They work both cold and with heating:
- Proma UO-120: steel flat bar 100x5 mm cold and 100x15 mm hot, round bar 18 mm cold and 30 mm hot, square tube 16x16 mm cold, angle 60x8 mm cold. Three pairs of bending radii, up to 120°.
- Holzmann UB 100A: flat bar 7x100 mm cold and 8x100 mm hot, round bar up to 27 mm hot, up to 120°, adjustable stop for repeat parts.
Pipe bender for square tube: what actually works
A hydraulic ram bender does not suit square or rectangular tube: the former is round, presses at one point, and the profile wall caves in. What works depends on what you need - an angle or an arc.
Rolling profile tube to a radius, rollers and the choice between manual and powered drive are covered in profile bender: how to bend square tube.
- A large-radius arc (greenhouse arch, canopy, gate) - a profile bender: the tube is rolled between rollers over several passes.
- An angle in small profile tube - a lever bender with square formers. The ROT-180K has formers for 3/4 and 1 inch square, roughly 19 and 25 mm, with a 0.8-1.2 mm wall.
- An angle in square tube up to 16x16 mm cold or up to 30x30 mm hot - the UO-120 universal bending machine.
Electric pipe bender: when it pays off
An electric (electromechanical) bender turns the bending die from a motor through a gearbox, and the angle is set by a stop or controller. The operator only loads the pipe and presses a pedal, so a hundred elbows come out identical. For thin-wall tube with a tight radius these machines use a mandrel - a plug inside the tube that keeps the wall from collapsing.
It pays off on batches: handrails, frames, furniture parts, exhaust systems. For a few elbows a week there is no point paying more - manual hydraulics does the same job, just slower. Capacities of electric benders vary widely by model, so they are selected for a specific pipe and radius. Send the sizes and drawing via the request form and we will propose options.

Typical mistakes and how to bend pipe without a bender
Without a bender, steel pipe is packed with dry sand, plugged at both ends and bent, sometimes with torch heating. That works for a few parts for yourself, but ovality and wall thinning at the bend are unpredictable, which is a risk for pressurised heating or gas lines. What a home-made tool can and cannot do is covered in home-made or factory pipe bender. General rules for radius and springback are in metal bending basics.
Typical mistakes that ruin pipes and formers:
- Wrong former size: a smaller one crushes the pipe, a larger one makes it oval. Check the outside diameter against the table above.
- Thin-wall or profile tube on a hydraulic bender - a wrinkle and a dent are guaranteed.
- The weld seam of welded pipe on the outside or inside of the bend. Place it on the side, in the neutral zone.
- No marking: mark the middle of the bend and centre it exactly on the former.
- Stainless and copper bent on formers with carbon steel residue - scoring and rust spots follow.
- Bending the finished part first. A test bend on an offcut shows the springback and the angle correction.
FAQ
Which pipe bender should I buy for square tube?
Arcs and arches from square or rectangular tube need a profile bender - a roll bending machine. A hydraulic ram bender is designed for round heavy-wall pipe; profile tube caves in on it.
What is the difference between a hydraulic and a manual pipe bender?
A hydraulic bender pushes a former with 10-16 t and bends heavy-wall water and gas pipe up to 2 inches. A manual lever bender wraps tube around a former and is meant for copper and thin-wall tubing up to 7/8 inch.
What does 1/2 inch on a bender former mean?
It is the nominal bore of water and gas pipe, DN15, not its outside diameter. The actual outside diameter of that pipe is 21.3 mm.
Can I bend thin-wall tube with a hydraulic bender?
Better not: the wall will flatten or wrinkle. The formers are rated for water and gas pipe with a 2.75-4.5 mm wall (per the HBM-240/16-R passport); thin walls need a lever bender or a mandrel machine.
How much does a pipe bender cost?
In our catalog hydraulic pipe benders cost from ~13,000 to ~30,000 UAH incl. VAT, and the manual ROT-180K about 17,900 UAH. All machines have a 12-month warranty and delivery across Ukraine.
How do I bend pipe without a pipe bender?
Steel pipe is packed with dry sand, plugged and bent, sometimes with heating. It works for one-off parts, but ovality and wall thinning are unpredictable, so use a bender for pressurised systems.
